A SCHEME to provide facilities for motorhome and campervan users visiting a north west Sutherland port can now go ahead thanks to a funding award.

Assynt Development Trust has been granted £102,245 from the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund for its aptly named Cludgie Project at Lochinver harbour.

The Cludgie Project is being developed at Lochinver harbour.

The initiative involves installing facilities for motorhomes at a car parking area located close to the community owned Assynt Leisure Centre.

The service will include waste and grey water disposal as well as fresh water top-up. Visitors would also be able to access facilities such as wi-fi, showers and tourist facilities at the community owned leisure centre.

Phase one of the works has already been undertaken and involved relaying the car park surface and installing a below-ground foul water tank.

A separate phase two is still to go ahead and comprises resurfacing the car park in tarmac with porous paving, and installing greywater disposal facility and sewer works.

Assynt Development Trust chairman Willie Jack said: “We are delighted that the bid to the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund has been successful and that the long awaited Cludgie Project can be finally completed.

“It has been a long struggle to realise this project, but we can now safely direct those visitors travelling in motorhomes and campervans to the Assynt Leisure Centre to empty their chemical toilets.

"This will be a great boost to the centre in terms of visitor numbers, use of facilities and income – all carried out on the soon-to-be resurfaced car park.

"The Cludgie project now makes the Assynt environment safer and adds a vital piece of infrastructure to the North West Highlands.”
