A PADDLEBOARDER sparked a rescue alert in the north-west Highlands in the tail of Storm Betty today.

Lochinver lifeboat crew were paged by Stornoway Coastguard at 10.50am after concerns were raised for the paddleboarder at Ardmair - located three miles north of Ullapool and eight miles south west of the Sutherland border.

A spokesperson for Lochinver RNLI said: “Thankfully the boarder made it to the shore where they were located by the Ullapool Coastguard Rescue Team and found to be in good health.”

The lifeboat crew were stood down and returned to station.

But writing on the station’s Facebook, one follower said: "He rambled across the heather and rocks where you actually can’t walk in his bare feet! Three frightened children on the beach watching!

“Still no idea where his paddleboard is! But let me tell you he is very lucky - someone was watching him! I can’t actually believe he went out in that! 50mph winds in Ullapool last night; yes slightly sheltered at Ardmair as is was a easterly wind but you could see it gusting across the bay! My mind is blown literally at the stupidity! I would have been mortified!”
