Members of the lieutenancy team, past and present, gathered for lunch to mark Mr Grant's retirement and to say thank you for his service.

He was presented with a specially commissioned silver kilt pin while his wife Norah received a beautiful bouquet of flowers in recognition of the support she has given to David over his years in the post.

Brought up in Achfary and a former Golspie High School pupil, David is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London and the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee, where he spent his post-graduate year.

His specialist subject was ceramics and in 1974 he founded Highland Stoneware, since then successfully making creative pottery in Lochinver and Ullapool and creating employment for 25-30 local people.
