The Nisa local store on Golspie’s Main Street has donated £414 to Golspie Primary School to help purchase equipment and seeds for a vegetable growing project.

Four pupils from the infant classes, accompanied by janitor Alexander Ross (Ozzie), visited the shop today to be presented with the cheque by store owners and husband and wife Michael and Sharon Hope.

It is the first donation the couple have made through the Making a Difference Locally scheme (MADL).

An independent charity, MADL was created in 2008 by Nisa with the intention of assisting independent retailers throughout the UK supplied by Nisa to raise money for their local communities.

The scheme works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted in store being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund.

Participating members are then able to choose local charities or good causes that they would like to donate to.

Mr and Mr Hope decided to donate to Golspie Primary School as they liked the idea of youngsters learning how to grow their own food.

“We are supported by the community so we in turn wanted to give something back,” said Mr Hope

Janitor Mr Ross recently built raised beds to the rear of the school’s gymnasium, next to the sandpit which will be planted out in time for the growing season.

The project is being undertaken as part of the Eco Schools initiative.
