A new, multi-species conservation programme has various events coming up in Caithness and Sutherland that volunteers can attend.

Species on the Edge, a new partnership programme of eight nature conservation organisations, is dedicated to reversing the decline of 37 priority species across Scotland’s coasts and islands.

The group aims to help increase the numbers of small blue butterflies locally and hear if anyone in the far north has spotted the rare great yellow bumblebee.

Upcoming events:

Tomorrow (Sunday, July 2) there will be a kidney vetch count in Caithness which will meet at 1.30pm at Castlehill Heritage Centre car park. Kidney vetch is a plant that small blue butterflies thrive on.

This is a volunteer event and travel expenses can be reimbursed within a 25 mile radius. Hot drinks and "decent biscuits" will be provided, say the organisers.
