The Brora Christmas Lights switch-on next Friday will be slightly different this year as there will be a live Nativity Scene in the bike shelter near the community centre.

Carols will be sung at 6pm followed by Sutherland Schools Pipe Band playing round the tree with the switch on officially happening shortly after.

Free hot chocolate and shortbread will be served in the community centre where Brora P7s will be selling Christmas crafts in aid of school trips and there will be a free goody bag for children containing toys, a Christmas book, fruit and sweets.

The pupil who will switch on the lights will be chosen by the Saturday “soup ladies” for the best drawing of the Nativity scene. Every class was asked to draw/paint a nativity scene where first, second and third prizes were given. Finally, all the first place winners will be judged to finally choose the ultimate winner to win the prestigious honour to press the button on Friday, December 6.

The event has been organised by the newly formed Brora Community Theatre Group who hope to engage the community in putting on drama, musical theatre and fun experiences for all ages in future.

One of the founders of the group, Melanie Webb said: “Folks say that at one time there was a thriving drama club in all the villages, but unfortunately this is no longer the case. We hope to revive the interest in performing arts locally. If people do not feel they would like to perform, there are many other skills that can be learned. “

The Nativity story is well known, but the variation is to have it outdoors and by torch light, so wrap up warm! There will be a census first, so that there is community interaction, and songs to help tell the story along. More young people are invited to arrive in appropriate costume.
