A COUPLE who are keen walkers, have complained about one of their favourite routes being blocked at a Sutherland beauty spot.

James and Isobel McFarlane of Carnoustie, have drawn attention to a newly erected, padlocked gate next to the pier at Littleferry, Golspie.

The gate means walkers cannot access the beach or the path alongside it without a 200m or so diverson through a car park at the rear of nearby houses.

The couple, who have been frequent visitors to East Sutherland over a 65-year period, have asked Highland Council’s access team to look into the issue.

Mrs McFarlane said: “I am dismayed to find a claim has been made on this access route."

Local councillor Richard Gale said: “I have had this raised with me and I am looking into what can be done.

“I am really concerned that by closing this area off there is a real danger if anyone were to fall into the water from the pier it would be virtually impossible to get to them quickly if the tide was flowing out.

“It was always possible to walk along that part of the pier without any obstruction.”

A Highland Council spokesman said: “Our local access officer has received a number of enquiries so has raised the matter with the local estate. Until they hear back from the landowners they cannot take this matter forward.”
