A rallying call has gone out to the people of Tain to roll up their sleeves and help keep their town looking beautiful.

A litter pick is planned for Saturday, April 1, to coincide with the national Keep Scotland Beautiful Spring Clean.

Tain and District Development Trust is now looking for volunteers.

“It’s a great way to encourage local people, especially youngsters, to care for and love their environment and show them how much wonderful local wildlife we have in this area. We need to help protect that wildlife by picking up litter and ensuring that no plastic waste ends up in our waterways. .Hopefully it will act as a springboard for similar events around the Easter Ross peninsula.” - Nickey Fraser

“We have already enlisted some individuals and business who want to take part – either by litter-picking or by supporting the event in other ways,” said Nickey Fraser, the Trust’s Hub Manager.

“Pipers Coffee House and Sunflowers Cafe have stepped up to the mark by agreeing to provide soup and cakes for the volunteers and Munro Fruit Merchants will be providing a hamper of fruit. Highland Council Waste Services are also supporting the event and a cash donation from

Tain Pet Supplies has allowed us to organise Marcia O’Hara, the Easter Ross Ranger, do some fantastic activities on the day.

“All this support is wonderful, but it would still be good to get more help - either from people who would like to take part in the litter pick itself or who would like to support and promote the event.”

The litter-picking team will be tackling areas around The Links and local shoreline where everything from cans and bottles to car tyres and fishing equipment is regularly dumped.

Nickey said that the idea for the litter pick came from two members of the community, Marc Coombes and Terri Cain who live in Tain, and the Trust was pleased to get behind it.

The clean-up starts at 10am and runs until 4pm. Volunteers can register at the main Links car park and offer as much time as they want.
