A Wick-based education leader who used Lego to help young people’s development has got plenty to keep him busy in his retirement – after former colleagues gave him sets of the building blocks as a gift.

Roger Bamfield, who retired as Highland Council’s north area additional support needs manager this summer, was given a send-off at Mackay’s Hotel. Colleagues from across Caithness and Sutherland gathered to bid farewell and wish Roger, who moved to the area in the 1990s, all the best in his retirement.

In a previous post, Roger introduced to schools across the Highland area a special approach to using Lego, designed to encourage and support young people living with autism to develop their speaking and listening skills and build friendships.

Nearly 150 education staff were trained to use Lego in this way.

Roger's retirement gifts therefore aptly included a Lego set to create a vase of wildflowers and another Lego set to build a typewriter.

He will be greatly missed across the north area by colleagues and families he supported.
