SUTHERLAND’s Lawson Memorial Hospital and adjacent Cambusavie unit are to be renamed, it has emerged.

The two buildings, located in Golspie, are in future to be known jointly as the Lawson Community Hospital.

It has been decided to choose a new name because the units, which have been operating separately, are being merged.

The decision was taken by community representatives at a meeting yesterday of the Lawson Site Community Improvement Group.

An NHS spokesman revealed: "The group discussed what the new unit should be called, with the final suggestion being The Lawson Community Hospital.

However the name Cambusavie will not be lost – it was suggested that the relatives’ room be renamed the Cambusavie Room.

Up until now the Lawson Memorial has had an outpatient and an inpatient department with 11 beds in two small wards as well as individual rooms.

The 14-bed Cambusavie Unit has been run solely as a Care of the Elderly Medical and Rehabilitation centre.

The revamp has been triggered by the dilapidated condition of the flat-roofed extension housing the Lawson’s outpatient department.

It’s considered to be no longer fit for purpose and is in line for demolition.

Work is now underway to move the outpatient department to the inpatient area. In turn the inpatient beds are being relocated to the Cambusavie Unit.

New wet rooms and en suite toilet facilities have been created in the unit, along with a new minor injury room, reception and an enlarged office area are being formed.

Flooring is being replaced and additional computer and telephone points added.

NHS managers say work is progressing well and 22 of the 25 beds should be in place by Christmas.

District Manager Ross Mackenzie said, "The new unit will provide significantly better accommodation for patients and at the same time improve the working environment for our staff."

In order to complete the alterations the Cambusavie Unit is closing between 6th and 21st December. Patients will move into the Lawson Memorial, where additional beds are being made available.
