Those involved with Sutherland Sheepdog Trials Association showed their appreciation last Friday of long-serving official Bob Tait, who is standing down after 37 years’ service.

Vice-president Mr Tait was presented with a gift by retired Brora farmer Murdo Ballantyne. Mr Tait’s wife Jan, who has been the group’s secretary for the last seven years, received a bouquet of flowers from Mr Ballantyne’s daughter-in-law, Victoria.

Mrs Ballantyne, who now farms at Clynelish Farm with husband Jason, is taking over the role of secretary from Mrs Tait.

The presentation took place at the conclusion of the annual trials, held in atrocious weather in a field opposite Clynelish Distillery on Saturday.

But the strong wind and constant rain failed to deter hardy sheepdog handlers from as far afield as Aberdeenshire, Skye and Shetland, and competition was fierce with an entry of some 53 dogs.

Overall winner was Michael Shearer of Caithness, who took home the coveted Wilson Shield.

Jan Mackenzie, Strathnaver, swept the boards winning not just the confined title but also an array of silverware after coming top in various categories.
