Two teams from Kinlochbervie High School took part, each sharing the aim of increasing awareness of the social issues of mental health and young carers in north-west Sutherland.

The initiative, principally funded by The Wood Foundation, is an active citizenship programme which empowers young people to make a difference in their community.

Both teams presented to an audience of peers, staff and guests from the charities being represented – Tykes (The Young Karers of East Sutherland) and Mikeysline.

A team of judges were tasked with deciding upon a winner - which included councillor Marianne Hutchison, Reverend Andrea Boyes, depute teacher Aileen MacDonald, parent council member Yvonne MacRae and pupil council member Harvey MacDonald. Head teacher Graeme Smart hosting the event.

The presentations were informative and showed real insight into the work of both charities.

While the judges deliberated, the audience was treated to some musical entertainment and refreshments from the pupils.

After a difficult decision, Tykes were announced as the winners and Magi and Denise were delighted to accept the £3000 cheque.

The charity already supports young carers on the west coast and this money will further enhance the work they do.

The runners-up, Mikeysline will receive a donation from the school after a fundraising event due to take place in February.
