A 30-year-old Easter Ross man with seven previous convictions for assaults was jailed for a year for another crime of violence.

Danny Sutherland, described as an Inverness prisoner, appeared by video link at Inverness Sheriff Court after sentence had been deferred for a background report.

His solicitor, Clare Russell, told Sheriff Margaret Neilson that her client was candid enough about his use of illicit substances. "But he is not motivated enough to deal with his misuse in the community and accepts there will be a custodial sentence.

"When arrested by police, he said he had 'zero recollection about this. But I am not denying it.' Since the breakdown of his relationship in 2018 , he has dabbled with alcohol and substances to block things out.

"He accepts violence is not the answer having dealt with matters previously with violence," Ms Russell said.

The court had been told that Sutherland attacked a man in Queen Street, Tain on July 23, 2019 having fallen out with him in Archways bar earlier that evening.

His victim was waiting for his father to pick him up when Sutherland appeared and punched him several times to the face. The injured man required hospital treatment to a cut lip.

Sutherland's sentence was backdated to January 31 when he was remanded in custody.
