A Helmsdale resident has reported seeing a massive “ball of fire” speed through the sky over the port yesterday evening.

Retired electrician Dave Moran is keen to know whether other local people also saw the fireball which he suspects could have been a huge meteor.

A meteor, sometimes called a shooting star, is actually pieces of dust and debris from space that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Mr Moran estimated the fireball was the size of two to three aeroplanes.

Particularly large chunks of material can create an extra-bright fireball streak.

Seventy-eight-year-old Mr Moran said he was sitting watching television at around 6.30pm last night when he caught sight of the fireball out of a nearby window.

“I have never seen anything like it in my life,” he said. “I looked out of my window and it was this giant ball of fire, the size of two to three planes.”

“It came from the sea and headed straight up the strath. It was very bright but there was no noise. It wasn’t as high as the surrounding hills. It was unbelievable.”

Mr Moran at first thought it could be “space junk” that had somehow hurtled down to Earth, but then decided it must have been a meteor.

He rushed outside but by that time the fireball had disappeared.
