Seventh heaven for Ullapool as creel tree declared a UK national treasure

A CHRISTMAS tree made from fishing creels and set to light up a Wester Ross port has made it onto a list of seven of the best in the UK.

Ullapool's creel tree has become the centrepiece of the village's festive light show which is being switched on later today (Friday).

The quirky creation has captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike, amongst them Harry Potter creator J K Rowlingwho told her 13 million Twitter followers a few years back: "How beautiful is this? Ullapool, a coastal town in Scotland, has a Christmas tree made of creels, with a crab on top."

It's part of a display organised by The Ullapool Fire and Light community group which is behind today's switch on.

The tree was also this week included in a Times newspaper round-up of seven of the UK's best Christmas trees. It features alongside The Connaught in London (with its 102 neon rings); Blenheim Palace's stunner and a walk-through spectacularin Bournemouth.

Of Ullapool unique attraction, The Times states: "It sounds weird but it looks surprisingly pretty when it's lit up after dark, Fittingly, rather than a fairy on top it's twinkling crab."
