Individuals and good causes in Sutherland benefit from latest Edinburgh Sutherland Association funding round

The Edinburgh Sutherland Association has donated £2,500 to five good causes in Sutherland after its recent call for applications.

Brora Primary Parent Council has been awarded £500 for signage around the village to advertise a new community playpark.

Young biker Lewis Duncan, Brora, is to receive £500 to cover his entry costs for the British and Scottish national downhill mountain bike competitions.

North coast community singing group Big Sing Macleod, has been successful in its application for £250 to cover travel and copyright costs.

Marine biology university student Ruaraidh Jack of Bettyhill will receive £500 for dive equipment to attend a research placement in Malta.

And Sutherland Care Forum has been granted £750 for its Friends at Home service, where volunteers visit and support older people in central and east Sutherland.

Association president Andrew Mackenzie, a Stoer native, said: "This latest donation means that in 11 years we have raised and donated over £23,000.

"We understand the importance of the support we have been able to provide to groups and individuals in Sutherland and want to thank everyone who has assisted with events and fundraising to date.

"We can only donate to these local good causes if we raise money through fundraising, donations and sponsorship.”

The association’s objectives are to give assistance where required to natives of Sutherland and other deserving persons; aid the education of young natives of Sutherland; and to promote the culture of Sutherland including its art, literature, music and language.
