HMS Sutherland, the warship affiliated to the county, is due home before Christmas after handing over its Middle East maritime policing patrol role to HMS Northumberland.

HMS Sutherland, nicknamed the Fighting Clan, has operated as part of the Combined Maritime Forces during the past five months, patrolling the sea lanes and waters of the Middle East and Indian Ocean to ensure the safety of seafarers.

During its patrol HMS Sutherland conducted boarding operations on suspect vessels and also took part in various security patrols and exercises with coalition and allied forces.

To celebrate the switch over, the ships med in mid ocean and fired off their fire hoses high into the air in a broadside of high pressure water jets. HMS Sutherland is due home before Christmas
