Police have confirmed that the window rattling noise, heard at approximately 1.50am, was the result of a collision between a lamp post and the vehicle, leaving several garden fences damaged in the process.

The driver then reportedly fled the scene.

A 34-year-old man has since been arrested.

Such was the impact of the collision, the noise could be heard in several homes nearby, with some residents believing it to have been caused by an aircraft, or a small earthquake.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a car having collided with a lamppost and fences at Burgage Drive in Tain around 1.50am on Friday, 11 August. The driver left prior to police arriving.

“A 34-year-old man was subsequently traced and arrested in connection with a road traffic offence. He has been released pending further enquiry.”
