A BOOK launched last week will “tug on the heartstrings” of anyone with even a distant connection to Brora, its author has said.

Brora in Fifty Stories has been written by historian Dr Nick Lindsay, and published by Clyne Heritage Society, of which he is chairman.

Proceeds from it will go towards the society’s ambitious Old Clyne School redevelopment project – the C-listed building is set to be transformed into a community heritage centre and museum.

Brora in Fifty Stories is a personal collection of stories Dr Lindsay has gathered over more than two decades. He has previously written several books on various aspects of the history of the parish.

The material for the new book has been gleaned through a variety of methods, ranging from interviews with the people featured, to stories assembled from printed sources, such as books, unpublished manuscripts, newspaper article, documents and letters.

Indeed so extensive is Dr Lindsay’s collection that he says there is more than enough material for another volume, or even more.

“Brora has an unbelievably rich supply of traditional stories which will pull on your heartstrings,” he said. “The book will give you a sense of engagement with the history and characters of this unique and fascinating parish.

“It will put you through a whole range of emotions from joy and fun to desperation and grief; all stemming from the indefatigable nature of the parish’s characters. Brora well and truly did, and continues to, punch above its weight.”

“The book is dedicated to all the people, characters and resources that the wonderful parish has had to offer over the years.”

Billy and Jocky Coull and Donnie Urquhart feature in the book.

Priced at £10, Brora in Fifty Stories is available in the Otter’s Couch shop in Brora and Lindsay’s in Golspie. It is also available by mail order at info@clyneheritage.com or though the society’s Facebook page.
