Work is to start up again on council house building projects throughout the Highlands in a move hailed as good news for the region's construction industry.

It follows the latest Scottish Government guidance on returning to construction sites in Scotland.

Contractors are supplying Highland Council with detailed work plans for safe working.

In line with the guidance, contractors will be carrying out “soft starts” with physical distancing being observed. This will allow workers to return to construction sites gradually while complying with safety measures such as hand hygiene and one-way systems.

Soft starts are getting under way this week on council housing projects in Inverness, Fort William and Dingwall.

The chairperson of the economy and infrastructure committee, Councillor Trish Robertson, welcomed the news that work was to resume.

“It is great news not just for the families waiting to move into new homes, it is also good news for the Highland construction industry and all associated trades," she said.

“Providing top-quality affordable housing remains a priority of the council and over the next few weeks work will start on more sites throughout the Highlands to deliver over 300 new council homes.”
