Highland councillors are to be given an update on plans for north Sutherland's new health and social care hub.

The North Coast Care Facility is on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting of the health, social care and wellbeing committee.

The facility at Tongue would replace the existing Melvich Care Home and Caladh Sona Care Home in Talmine, both of which are six-resident facilities and are said to have "significant building condition and suitability issues".

Members will be given a progress report on the development and will be asked to note that a report setting out recommendations on the procurement and delivery route will be considered by the council on June 24.

The report says the purpose of the new hub will be "to deliver modern care and associated facilities in one of the more rural parts of the Highlands".

The local authority has worked with NHS Highland to progress the scheme as well as with Wildland, the company owned by business tycoon and north coast landowner Anders Holch Povlsen.

The report notes that a joint working group with representatives from the council, NHS Highland and Wildland has been meeting regularly.

Discussions with planners have taken place and further meetings are scheduled.

Highland Council has allocated £5 million in its capital plan for the new complex.
