CASH-strapped Highland Council used taxpayers’ money to subsidise more than £180,000 of councillors’ expenses last year.

The figures for 2019-20 show an increase in the total amount paid out in salaries plus expenses compared to the year before.

It came despite six councillors not making any expense claims for the past 12 months.

A total of £1,591,343 was paid in salaries plus expenses last year – up from £1,578,885 in 2018-19.

There were 24 councillors who collected a smaller total in 2019-20 than the year before, including Sutherland representatives Kirsteen Currie, Jim McGillivray, Deirdre Mackay and Hugh Morrison.

Sutherland councillors returns were: Kirsteen Currie – Salary £17,469; phone £104; total £17,573, down £549 on last year.

(Figures rounded up/down. Salaries increased if chairman or vice-chairman of committee etc).

Throughout the Highland Council area, claims totalling £182,784 of expenses were paid out last year – down from £206,903 in 2018-19.
