He said yesterday: "As convener of The Highland Council I have, today, written to the Consul General of the Ukraine in Scotland expressing our support for the heroic efforts of the armed forces and citizens of Ukraine in their valiant defence of their democratic country from the unprovoked invasion by a tyrannical oppressor.

"I have also written (vented my spleen would be more like it) to the Consul General of Russia in Scotland expressing my disgust over the actions of his country's leadership in ordering the invasion of a sovereign nation.

"We need to take a lesson from history - appeasement did not work in 1939 and it won't work today.

"We need to stand up and be counted and damage this tyrannical Russian regime by every means possible.

"Putin cannot be allowed to get away with this!"
