Twelve brave members of Inverness Musical Theatre’s Legally Blonde cast shifted their preparations for the show up a gear on Saturday at Inverness Cycle Studio in the Eastgate Centre.

Stepping up the programme for getting the IMT cast stage-ready for the show’s dates at Eden Court (March 30-April 2), director Claire Fisher had the inspired idea to borrow one of the challenges from the popular American TV reality show The Search For Elle Woods.

On the show, 10 hopeful Elles – hoping to win the Broadway role – take to spin bikes for a singthrough of the musical’s songs.

In a muscle-pumping programme, city fitness instructor Jenny Rankine encouraged the Inverness cast members to keep up as they also ran through the songs for the ultimate test of stamina.

“Catch your breath – if you can while you’re singing!” she egged everyone on.

Six months of rehearsal in, the IMT cast proved their willpower – one of Elle’s best qualities.

And despite the challenge, the group were in great voice for numbers such as So Much Better.

The video gives a taster of the show to come in a few weeks' time!

The full-on demands of the non-stop action of the musical version of Legally Blonde means extra effort is needed from the company to do the show justice.

And IMT musical director Alan Mackintosh, who took to a spin bike himself, said: “There’s a line in the show about being the Duracell bunny keeping going and going and that’s what this feels like!”

Natalie Sutherland who is playing Elle Woods in her debut with IMT, said: “I’ve stepped up my fitness training since rehearsals began in October, going to the gym and eating well.”

Afterwards, Jenny – whose twin Caroline MacPherson plays Elle’s friend Paulette – revealed the session had suggested a new fitness concept.

“Sing and spin would make a great class!”
