The response, on notepaper headed Windsor Castle and with a crest on it, was written by Her Majesty’s lady-in-waiting, Lady Elton.

She wrote: “The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for the letters that you sent to Her Majesty on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.

“The Queen was glad to be reminded of her visit to Helmsdale Primary School in 1964, and although unable to reply to you personally, Her Majesty greatly appreciated the nice things you said.

“I am to thank you again for your messages of good wishes to the Queen in this, her Platinum Jubilee year."

The pupils also received a separate card with a picture of the Queen on it along with the short message: "I send you my grateful thanks for your kind message on the occasion of the Seventieth Anniversary of my Accession to the throne."

Celebrations are planned in June in Sutherland to mark the anniversary.
