A Helmsdale native who successfully lobbied for a milestone change in domestic abuse legislation in England, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

Fiona Mackenzie, whose father Colin Mackenzie still lives in the Sutherland village, received the honour for “services to raising awareness of sexual violence against women”.

London-based Ms Mackenzie founded campaign group We Can't Consent To This in protest at a legal defence of "rough sex" in cases where women or girls were killed or violently injured.

She told the Northern Times she was “very pleased and honoured” at the distinction.

She said: “I’m really humbled by this award and so grateful to everyone who has lent their support and hard work to We Can’t Consent To This.

“In 2022 and beyond, we’re going to keep working to make sure that victims and their families see real change in the criminal justice system.”
