A keen Brora angler has gained the distinction of catching the first fish off the Helmsdale three week after the start of the 2020 season.

Local fishing tackle, outdoor and country shop shop Glencoast announced that Addie Sutherland had landed a 13.5lb springer, long-tailed and with sea lice at Little Rock, beat 6, at 10.30am on Friday.

Ghillie Johnny Sutherland helped to land the fish and verified it.

A presentation was later held at Glencoast with Addie Sutherland receiving an Austrian crystal vase, donated by the Bridge Hotel in 2000 and presented annually to the angler who catches the first fish. The vase will be engraved with Mr Sutherland’s name.

He was also presented with a whisky stave, made by Ian Horne, Caithness, and a bottle of gin donated by Ice and Fire Distillery, Latheronwheel.

Glencoast operator Yvonne Grant said Mr Sutherland had been thrilled at the catch.

“He was like the cat that got the cream,” she said. “But he deserves it - he puts in the hours.”

More than 200 anglers enjoyed free fishing following the river opening.
