Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd yesterday sold 535 Continental cross store cattle, yearlings and weaned calves at their annual show and sale sponsored by Watson Seeds.

The judge, Mr D Budge, Brae Edge, Caithness, awarded the overall champion to a 435kg British Blue cross heifer from Invercharron Mains, Ardgay realising £1920. The Reserve Champion was then awarded to a 460kg Limousin cross from Little Croy Farm, Inverness realising £1500.

Other prizes awarded:

2nd Prize Heifer – 2 Lochend, Barrock.

2nd Prize Bullock – Little Croy Farm.

Bullocks (288) averaged 258.2p (up 23.0p on the year) and sold to 326.1p per kg and £1,500 gross for a 460kg Limousin cross from Little Croy Farm, Inverness.

Heifers (145) averaged 233.1p (up 14.4p on the year) and sold to 441.1p per kg and £1,920 gross for a 435kg British Blue Cross from Invercharron Farm, Ardgay.

The verdict: “Store cattle were a very mixed selection of breeds, weights and quality. Well-grown and well presented lots were on fire and keenly bid for by a full compliment of buyers sold at prices above seller’s expectations. The Caithness consignments were a feature of the sale and more of these well bred and well-presented cattle could have been sold.”

OTM feeding bulls (6) sold to 121.8p per kg for a 780kg Limousin from Corriebheinn Farms, and £1,200 for a 1160kg Aberdeen Angus from Garthbeg farms.

The verdict: “OTM’s were a fiery and spirted trade with fleshy continental cows selling at increased rates to an ever-increasing number of buyers. Lean feeding older cows were also sought after. There will be opportunities to sell OTM cows every week following store cattle sales during October. We encourage vendors to notify cows for sale as we can contact prospective buyers of numbers forward.”
