Contractors had to be called back for a second time after beach users slammed a temporary repair on a damaged sewage pipe discharging waste onto the shoreline at Brora as a “Heath Robinson” affair.

The temporary repair on the pipe at Brora’s back shore, which suffered sea damage in November, was only carried out some three weeks ago, but it soon failed.

A section of the pipe broke in stormy weather last November.

One local resident who regularly walks his dog on the beach, said: “To liken the repair to anything created by Heath Robinson would be to give it significantly more credit than it is due.

“Whoever thought this concoction of straps and loose rocks would hold has little understanding of the power of the sea.”

Scottish Water ordered contractors back to undertake a more robust repair, although further work has still to be carried out.

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: “Following confirmation that our contractor did not expect tide and weather conditions to be suitable to make a permanent repair earlier this month, we asked them to explore whether a temporary repair would be possible in the interim.

“They carried out a temporary repair in an effort to bring about improvement earlier than was otherwise possible.

The temporary repair has been monitored closely and our local team identified that a leak had occurred.

“Our contractor was asked to remedy this as soon as possible.”
