After a pause in fundraising activities for much of 2020 due to Covid-19, the Edinburgh Sutherland Association is back this year calling all charities and worthy causes, including individuals, based in, or with links to, Sutherland, to apply for funding.

The association’s objectives are to give assistance where required to natives of Sutherland and other deserving persons; to aid the education of young natives of Sutherland; and to promote the culture of Sutherland, including its art, literature, music and language.

Over the past 10 years, the association has donated more than £21,000 to good causes in the county. In 2019 it donated more than £3,000 to seven organisations and one individual. Among the recipients was Sutherland Care Forum which was granted £500 towards the travel costs of running a mobile footcare service.

Association president Andrew Mackenzie, a Stoer native, said: "We are sorry that our fundraising activities were impacted by Covid-19, but we did manage to host a virtual ceilidh in November and hope to have some further fundraising events this year.

"We have also received some generous donations and would encourage more donations at this tough time for the charity.

"We now have some funds to donate to good causes in Sutherland again, so we invite applications for funding for 2021.

"We are very grateful to all those who have assisted with events and fundraising to date. We can only donate to local good causes if we raise money through fundraising, donations and sponsorship.”

Association secretary Steven Anderson, from Dornoch, said: "Applicants should demonstrate in writing why they are deserving within the meaning of the objectives of the association. We are particularly interested in requests looking for a specific amount for a project or part of a project."

The closing date for applications is Friday, June 25, and a decision on funding will be taken by the a committee of association members in late June or early July.

Applications can be made via the association's website, www.sutherlandassociation.co.uk or by email: apply@sutherlandassociation.co.uk
