A FUNDRAISING Back Yard Ultra (BYU) is set to be held in Golspie for the first time ever next month.

The race is a type of ultramarathon where runners run laps of a set course on the hour every hour.

Runners aim to complete the loop within the hour to be ready to start again on the hour until they either time out or stop.

The race continues for as long as is required for there to be only one runner left – that runner is then declared the winner.

Golspie residents Ian and Nikki Harrison are organising the event which is taking place in the grounds surrounding Dunrobin Castle, by permission of Lord Sutherland.

Ian last year won the first ever BYU to be held in Scotland.

The 4.167 mile route encompasses grass, tarmac and woodland path. It starts in front of the castle by the sea, turns left towards Dairy Park, then up the hill back towards the castle, through the trees and back along the seafront.

Nikki said: "This will be Golspie's first-ever Back Yard Ultra. Competitors will run/walk/crawl through woodland paths, along a core path next to the sea and tarmac road in front of the castle. The course is undulating and spectacular even on a cold windy day."

The winner of the Golspie event will receive a bespoke watercolour of Dunrobin Castle and runners who reach the 24 hours, which marks 100 miles, will receive special prizes.

"We have a range of runners entered from those who have never done a BYU to very seasoned runners," Nikki said. "We are excited to see people achieve the best they can."

The Harrisons have set a cap at 100 runners. The entry fee is £50. Anyone interested in taking part or for more information, email: harrisonnicolajayne75@gmail.com

The Golspie Back Yard Ultra is taking place on Saturday, November 4, and starts at 10am.

All money after expenses will go to Highland and Islands Blood Bikes.
