Members of a Sutherland rowing club returned victorious after a great showing at the first annual Orkney Coastal Rowing Regatta on Saturday, August 20.

After several events at Scapa Beach, Golspie Rowing Club returned with the overall winners prize – a unique trophy fashioned from two pieces of offcut wood used in the building of skiff boats.

They also claimed first place in the 40+ men, Open men and 50+ mixed categories.

The event – dubbed “The Most Northerly Skiff Regatta” – featured clubs from all over the Highlands, including hosts Orkney, Ullapool, Lossiemouth, Burghead, Cromarty, Avoch and Strathpeffer.

Wind delayed proceedings until the afternoon, prompting the hosts to organise a tug-o-war between visiting teams.

A statement on the group’s Facebook page read: “It was too bumpy to row early on, but at about half past one it settled enough to have a great day’s racing.”

“Golspie had some great results and finished the day by winning overall and we took home this beautiful Orkney trophy.

“We’re thrilled and would like to thank Orkney for being such great hosts. We will definitely be back.”
