School pupils are hoping they will have a garden of purple to raise money for children living with the fear of contracting polio.

Golspie Primary School's Rota Kids Club, has planted 1000 crocus bulbs in a bid to raise money for Purple4Polio.

The plan is to raise awareness of the Purple4Polio campaign with the crocus carpet ahead of two school fundraising challenges.

The money will be matched by Golspie Rotary Club and then doubled again by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Golspie Primary School head teacher, Simon Scott, said he was pleased at all the planting the Rota Kids Club primary six pupils had been doing.

Mr Scott said: "We have planted almost 1000 crocus bulbs. They should come up in the spring time creating a garden of purple for everyone to enjoy.

"The children have been brilliant in getting out to plant the crocuses, they are really committed to helping eradicate polio in the world.

"Purple is used for the polio campaign because when children in developing countries have a polio test they have to dip their fingers in purple ink to show they have been tested."

The campaign is known as Purple4Polio, and is a Rotary Club UK campaign. It is hoped by raising awareness of the issues developing countries are still experiencing with polio that it can be eradicated, as it has been in many countries in the the world.

Mr Scott continued: "When the crocus blossom in spring, pupils will be taking part in a swim-a-thon and a walk-a-thon to raise money for the charity.

"The Rota Kids club is made up of nine primary six pupils who link in with the work of Golspie Rotary Club. But when it comes to the fundraising all the pupils will take part."

"A huge thank you for the lovely carpet of crocuses our Rota Kids Club have put in place to welcome in spring."
