An appeal for used crisp bags in the Golspie area has been a resounding success.

Some 1350 crisp packets, weighing 2.7kg, have been handed in to two outlets in Golspie since the appeal went out in December.

The crisp recycling scheme, which is registered with recycling organisation Terracyle and Walkers Crisps, is a fundraiser for Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA).

The organisation is trying to raise £6 million to pay for a second helicopter using the call sign Helimed79.

An SCAA spokesman said: "Alongside Helimed 76 based in Perth, a second air ambulance based in Aberdeen will help us in our mission to deliver more care, more quickly to more people across Scotland."

The collection points in Golspie are the Main Street offices of Voluntary Groups East Sutherland and Golspie Primary School.

The bags are sorted and taken to a Helimed79 collection plant in Aberdeen where they are weighed and then sent to Walkers Crisps.

Walkers in turn send them to be turned into plastic pellets which can be used to make items such as park benches, plant pots, watering cans and cool bags.

VGES this week said a public thank you to everyone who had handed in crisp bags and urged people to continue doing so.
