Tain-based Glenmorangie Distillery sees own distillery manager hailed as best in the world at Icons of Whisky Global Awards 2022

THE manager of one of Ross-shire's most successful distilleries has been has been lauded as the world’s best at prestigious industry awards.

Ed Thom, Glenmorangie’s Distillery Manager, was named Global Distillery Manager of the Year at the Icons of Whisky Global Awards 2022 in recognition of his team’s work to sustain and improve the distillery’s beautiful Highland surroundings.

The Tain distillery also scooped another award in the Best Scotch Highlands Single Malt of the Year category with their Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1996.

Glenmorangie CEO and president, Thomas Moradpour, said: “At Glenmorangie we have been carefully crafting whisky for hundreds of years. Sustainability is an absolute focus for us, as we share the joy of our whisky with even more people around the globe. Led by Ed, our distillery team is dedicated to enhancing the world around us while we grow, so I’m delighted their efforts have been recognised alongside Dr Bill’s delicious creation, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1996.”

First named Icons of Whisky’s Scottish Distillery Manager of the Year, Mr Thom has now been honoured in the global awards over regional winners from the U.S, Japan, Ireland and the rest of the world, for his team’s environmental achievements.

They have been central to projects such as: integrating Glenmorangie’s multi-million-pound anaerobic digestion plant which purifies 98 per cent of the distillery’s waste water; reducing fuel use by 15 per cent and switching the Distillery’s natural gas supply to biogas.

According to the judging panel, the winner has seen sustainability become a core part of the whisky industry and is committed to his distillery’s approach towards responsible land and water management.

Created by Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1996 is the oldest single malt ever to be aged in Glenmorangie’s famed “designer” casks.
