Handmade poppies are needed for an event to mark the centenary of Lairg War Memorial.

An appeal has now gone out for local people to knit, crochet, or make felt poppies and drop them off at collection points.

Lairg District Community Initiatives (LDCI) are collaborating with deputy lieutenant Sheila Stewart to plan the commemorative ceremony.

LDCI board member Alison Magee said in a report to Lairg Community Council last Wednesday that it was intended to form a “cascade of poppies” from the top to the bottom of the war memorial railings.

The handsome column type monument enjoys a commanding position ovelooking Loch Shin.

It was unveiled on September 30, 1922, and local resident Angela Sutherland has found a copy of the original service of dedication.

Mrs Magee said local organisations including the primary school, learning centre and history society, would be involved in the event.

“We want to make it a memorable day,” she said. “It is a very important occasion for Lairg."

Collection points have already been established at the Lairg Library and Lairg Learning Centre.

It is hoped to add some shops to the list of collection points.
