Gas mask found near Dounreay unconnected to site

Dounreay denies that a gas mask found along the coast close to the site is connected with the nuclear facility.

A member of Caithness Beach Cleans came across the discarded item while picking up rubbish from the beach at Crosskirk which is around four miles along the coast from Dounreay.

Caithness Beach Cleans removes plastic and other materials from the county's beaches and its members post pictures of the rubbish and tally up the weights.

Yesterday, a Dounreay spokesperson said: "The team was able to confirm that the respirator has not originated from the Dounreay site as it has no identification markings and elements of its design associated with the diaphragm and chin strap do not match our current or any old stock. More likely from the marine or offshore industry."

The beach cleaners group will keep the item for public events in which it displays some of its more unusual finds.
