Highland funeral director offers new way to celebrate loved one’s life

John Fraser and Son of Lovatt House is offering families the chance to purchase fireworks filled with a small amount of ashes.
Although it might sound unusual the firm says the initiative comes in response to requests from families themselves and has already been received positively.
It has also already been used in Inverness at small events held as a celebration of life, the company added.
John Fraser and Son proprietor, Vicki Fraser, said: “We have been asked to provide fireworks from ashes for a few of our families so far, and they have all said they really enjoyed the results.
“Most of the families ordered fireworks through us to mark a special date, like the anniversary of their loved one’s death, or their birthday, and they set them off after dark as part of a separate celebration of their loved one’s life.
“One family mentioned to me that having fireworks was almost the excuse they needed to organise the celebration, which took place a few months after the funeral.
“She said that getting the family together again to share happy memories and stories was quite healing for them.
“I think people particularly like that only a small portion of the ashes is added to the fireworks, meaning the rest can be interred or scattered as the family choose.”
She continued: “Social distancing during the pandemic meant that funeral numbers were severely restricted.
“We know some families are planning to hold celebrations of life once restrictions ease and we’re expecting a few fireworks will be ordered for those occasions too.”
