A Dornoch fundraiser who is determined to tackle a 100km walk this year, has completed the ‘warm-up’ phase of her mission.

Hazel MacLean took part in The Mighty Stride - a 23-mile trek that forms part of the Glasgow Kiltwalk -on Sunday, April 28.

She was accompanied by friends Hazel Murdoch, who was walking for Ayrshire Hospice, and Jjakki Kyle, who was walking for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.

It took the trio nine hours and 56 minutes, including rest breaks, to walk from Glasgow Green to the finish line at Balloch, Loch Lomond. Their total walking time was seven hours and 51 minutes.

Hazel was walking in aid of Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs and has so far raised more than £300 for the charity through her JustGiving page.

She said: “Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs is a fantastic local charity that gives everyone, regardless of age or ability, the opportunity to access our beautiful beach in Dornoch. A small donation from lots of people will go a long way!”

She described the Mighty Stride as a ‘nice warm-up’ for the London to Brighton Ultra 100km, which takes place over two days on May 25 and 26.

And Hazel has also signed up for another 100km walk later in the year - the Thames Path Ultra on September 9 and 10.

In between the two ultras she will be taking part in Lochness 24, completing as many laps as she can do in 24 hours.

Isla Fullrton-Smith of Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs posted on the group’s social media page that everyone had been “rooting” for Hazel.

“Thank you once again for supporting Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs,” she said.
