25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of October 2, 1998

Brora's £5 million new woollen mill looks set to have a royal opening. Approaches have already been made to the Prince of Wales to see whether he will be available in spring next year to perform the honours. Limited production is already under way at the new mill.

A CONFIDENTIAL document leaked to the Northern Times this week has revealed that the JET 2000 unit in Golspie is definitely to close shortly, with the loss of five full-time jobs. But management of the Highland-wide jobs and training network, run by a consortium of Thurso and Inverness colleges, are still refusing to confirm or deny the unit is to be shut down.

Another Sutherland sporting estate went on the market this week, joining four others in the county already put up for sale this year. The 2,242 acre Bowside Estate, situated near Strathy, is being offered in four lots or as a whole, with an asking price of over £250,000. The estate is presently owned by Fountain International.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 28, 1973

At the harbour committee's recent meeting there was submitted a letter from Mr Robert Maclennan, MP., regarding coastal erosion at Helmsdale. The committee agreed to submit to St Andrew's House a case based on a report by Mr Gordon Edmond, surveyor, for the reconstruction of the whole of the breakwater at Helmsdale harbour.

The fishermen at Kinlochbervie harbour want a slipway for small boats, incorporating a berthing place for fishing boats. A grant application regarding such a request had already been refused by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Sutherland Harbours Committee were told. It was agreed that a deputation should inspect the site and report back.

Mrs Carnegie Miller of Skibo Castle was guest of honour at Clashmore WRI's 50th birthday party in the local hall last Friday. The institute is the oldest in Sutherland and Mrs Carnegie Millers's mother, Mrs Andrew Carnegie, helped to found it in 1923.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 27, 1923

A sale of Cheviot ewes and lambs was held at Rhiconich Hotel on Tuesday. An extra lot of buyers from Aberdeen and England were forward. The stock long being well known met a keen demand. The top price of the sale was realised for a lot of cast ewes from Fanagmore followed by Skeircha at the same figure. Lambs ranged from 25s to 35s, a special lot reaching 39s.

The erection of the public hall at Halladale is progressing favourably and may be finished in a few weeks. Improvements are also about finished at the UF Church Mission House, Strathhalladale.

Who can deny that Rogart is not a favoured parish, at least so far as their school children are concerned. The Drill Hall was the scene on Friday of another great gathering, not only of school children but their parents and others . On this occasion it was the annual presentation of valuable book prizes presented by the Rogart Educational Association.
