THE Far North is set to lose control of the National Health Service if the Highland Health Board has its way. The board has agreed to recommend to Scottish Health Minister Sam Galbraith that only two Highland-wide NHS Trusts be set up under Government changes due to come into effect next April. Both would be based in Inverness and one would look after acute services such as hospitals and consultants and the other would be responsible for primary care including GPs. Caithness and Sutherland NHS Trust has urged the retention of a locally-based NHS trust for the two counties, providing acute and primary care services to its area.

An application for planning consent has now been lodged for a proposed £1.5 million watersports and outdoor activities centre at Lochinver. The project, which is backed by local businessman Alec Munro among others, is expected to create upwards of two dozen full-time and part-time jobs. The proposed site is at the Aird Glas headland, just south of the harbour breakwater.

But it was emphasised that uniform would be worn only on official occasions.

The Kirkwall smack Danish Rose (29 ton), while on the passage from Cromarty to Lerwick, sprang a leak and sank off Brora on Thursday morning. The crew after efforts to pump out the water failed, abandoned the smack and took to their small boat and rowed to Helmsdale. The vessel was only partly covered by insurance.

Under the auspices of the Rogart branch of the British Legion, the Rogart Highland Gathering will take place in a field at Davochbeg on Wednesday first. There is a splendid programme of open and local events, for which handsome money prizes are offered. Judging by the entries to date, there is sure to be keen competition in all the events.
