Sutherland's mobile library van sustained £40,000 worth of damage when it collided with a train at the open level crossing in Gower Street, Brora, last Thursday. No one was hurt in the low-speed incident. A police spokesman said the driver had been charged in relation to the incident.

Plans to establish a golfing centre in Dornoch are being held back because so much public funding is going to the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), it was claimed this week. Local councillor Duncan Allan is frustrated at the slow progress being made in finding cash to finance the £600,000 development. A recent bid for European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) assistance of around £250,000, to convert the former Ross House school hostel into a centre, was knocked back.

A DIVER believed to be suffering from decompression sickness, was airlifted from his fishing boat at Loch Eriboll and flown to the hyperbaric chamber at Kishorn.

Mr Harry Clunie, in his ninth year as Provost of Dornoch, was made a Freeman of the royal burgh at an impressive ceremony at Dornoch Academy last Saturday. The honour was conferred on him by the Town Council and he was presented with the burgess ticket by Senior Bailie J. A. T. Seatter.

The possibility of 50 acres of ground north of Brora golf course as a construction site for North Sea oil production platforms is being put forward by the Scottish Development Department for discussion. It is understood that representatives of the Chicago Bridge Company, whose proposals to build platforms at Dunnet Bay were the subject of a recent public inquiry, were in the Brora area last week assessing the situation.

The SNP Constituency Association will meet at Helmsdale tomorrow to discuss a motion to establish a Young Nationalist branch in the county. If it is adopted, a constitution will be drawn up for the new branch.

A LARGE congregation assembled in Dornoch Cathedral on Sunday on the occasion of the dedication of the stained glass window erected in the south transept in memory of the men connected with the congregation who fell in the Great War. The window is a beautiful work of art and was designed and executed by Mr James Ballantine, Edinburgh. The design shows the figure of a medieval knight in armour in an attitude expressive of rest and peace after victory, holding the banner emblazoned with the Cross. At his feet lie his discarded helm and broken sword.

A VERY pleasant little ceremony took place on the Lower Links, Dornoch, on Saturday afternoon when the newly reconstructed course was opened by Mrs Sykes of Dornoch Castle. Ex-Provost Moore presided over the ceremony.

Mrs Carnegie has arrived at Skibo Castle. She attended divine worship in the cathedral on Sunday.
