25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of May 22, 1998

Sutherland's only independent dairy has been forced to close its doors because local Spar shops are taking cheaper milk from a processor in the south. Two full-time jobs and two part-time jobs have been lost with the shut down of Dunrobin Home Farm Dairy in Golspie. Tenant farmer John George Cormack and his wife Maureen are now having to sell their milk to the North of Scotland Milk Co-operative Society in Nairn. The couple saw 95 per cent of the their business wiped out when Spar shops throughout East Sutherland cancelled their order without warning.

Long-awaited improvements currently being carried out to Embo's streets – once dubbed the worst in the Highlands – have failed to please locals. Over 200 residents, almost the entire adult population of the village, have signed a petition of protest and have contact their MP about the matter. They claim the £75,000 improvement scheme is a cheap "patchwork" job and not the extensive upgrading they were led to believe would happen

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of May 18, 1973

History was made last Sunday when there took place at Dornoch Cathedral the last town council "kirking". In approximately two years, town councils will go out of existence with the reorganisation of local government and there will never again be a town council election. And so the cathedral service, conducted by Rev Frederick Fulton was of special significance.

Loch Eriboll, on the north-west coast, and Brora, on the east coast, have been pinpointed as possible sites for construction yards for building oil platform towers. They are two of 28 Scottish coastal sites named in a Government report just published, but only a very few are likely to be considered acceptable by planning authorities, it is suggested. Many of them are in environmentally sensitive areas, the report says.

The Scottish National Party, who have just issued a booklet, The Reality of Scotland's Oil, give nine examples of how Scotland could benefit from North Sea oil.
