25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of April 10, 1998

The importance of the two West Coast ports of Kinlochbervie and Lochinver has been recognised by the Highland and Islands Fire Board, which proposes to give their auxiliary firemen retained firefighter status with additional equipment and facilities.

Golspie firm the Orcadian Stone Company have been given the initial go-ahead to expand their operations into West Sutherland. The company plan to establish a geological interpretive centre at the former Unapool School in Kylesku.

Ian and Janice Sinclair took over ownership of the Bannockburn Inn in Helmsdale last week and local people are delighted. The popular couple are returning to the area where they lived for 11 years and where Janice was born and raised.

Extensive renovation and refurbishment work to Lochinver Village Hall is due to start on Monday. The facelift has been made possible by a £86,840 Lottery award.

50 YEARS AGO

When the wreckage of their lobster boat was found on Thursday of last week, organised search was abandoned for the two missing fishermen from Skerray, Mr Hector Mackay (70) and county roadman Mr John Anderson.

AN English development company has acquired 30 acres of land at Bishopfield, Dornoch. The land has been considered jointly by the town council and county council for housing.

Army engineers are making good progress in their survey of a site at Durness for a proposed civilian airstrip. The Army engineers are more than half-way through the survey.

Under the auspices of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship, a young people's conference will take place this weekend in Brora Community Centre for the fourth successive year. Close on 100 people from many parts of Scotland will be attending There are a number of speakers.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of April 5, 1923

The reports on Halladale, Forsinain, Forsinard, Invershin, Kildonan, and Melvich schools were very satisfactory, good work being done in all the schools. Kirtomy report was not so satisfactory. Cape Wrath pupils made a good appearance. The outstanding report submitted was the one on Durine shcool. In every department excellent progress had been made. The school was in a more efficient state at the time of examination than it had been for a number of years.

Mrs Andrew Carnegie and her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Rosewell Miller, will arrive at Skibo Castle early in June for a stay of several months. This will be their first visit to Skibo since 1921, when their stay was a short one.

A FIRE, which caused the complete destruction of the building and contents took place in the shop of Mr John W. Mackay, Portskerra, in the early hours of Monday morning.
