25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of April 3, 1998

The parish of Farr and Altnaharra has a new locum minister in the person of the Rev Heather Oslen, the first lady minister to serve in the North Coast area. Miss Olsen was originally a primary teacher but felt called to the ministry and served in various parts of central Scotland before going on to locum work and pulpit supply.

A 23-year old creel maker from Talmine, near Tongue, was this week named Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Highlands. Jamie Beveridge won the £1500 first prize at the Highland final of the 1998 Shell LiveWire Young Business Start-up awards in Inverness.

A PLAN to create a golf training and development centre has taken a step forward with the purchase for £160,000 of a home for the project. Thurso College have agreed to buy Ross House in Dornoch from Highland Council.

The derelict Sutherland Transport premises in the centre of Lairg have been demolished.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 30, 1973

Two lifeboats from Thurso and Stromness and an RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth were searching off the North Sutherland coast yesterday for two missing Skerray fishermen. In the morning wreckage from their lobster boat was identified. Both single, the missing men are Mr Hector Mackay (70), Achnabat, a native of Island Roan, and county roadman Mr John Anderson (54), Clashaidy.

Steel erector Terry Atkinson (35), who suffered face and hand burns when a tar drum exploded while he was working on the new bridge at Bonar-Bridge recently, was discharged from Golspie’s Lawson Memorial Hospital yesterday after making a good recovery.

Famous piping judge Mr Angus Macpherson, Achany, who will be 96 in July, has been presented with a kilt by a deputation from Ardgay-Bonar Pipe Band to mark his completing almost 50 years as band president. The deputation was led by band secretary, Mr Tom Robertson, of Lairg.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 29, 1923

The present postal arrangements in the north have been the cause of numerous complaints all over the counties of Caithness and Sutherland. Sir Archibald Sinclair, MP, has taken the matter up with the Postmaster-General with the result that a conference is to be held at Lairg on April 6.

The clerk to Clyne Parish Council intimated at a meeting last week that he had an application from a poor person for a pair of boots. The council unanimously agreed to supply the boots and instructed the clerk to visit the cheap sales to see if he could get a good pair.

A letter was then read from the clerk to the Golspie Parish Council asking Clyne Parish council if they were prepared to sell the old lamp standards in Brora. The Council agreed to sell them for £1 each. As one or two applications had been received in Brora for the standards, the local people were to have the first claim and Golspie could have the remainder.
