25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 13, 1998

After years of setbacks, plans to build a new village hall in Durness are back on course and it is hoped a site at Druim Bhlar will prove suitable. In the last few weeks outline planning permission has been applied for at Druim Bhlar, a site where test digs have shown building would be possible. The new hall was first suggested about 10 years ago.

Sutherland's first consultant psychiatrist has just been appointed by the area's NHS Trust. She is Dr Christine MacGregor (40) who currently works as a senior registrar in the child and family psychiatry unit at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The creation of a consultant psychiatrist post in Sutherland is part of the NHS Trust's strategy to provide a comprehensive community-based mental health service in the area.

Ardgay and Edderton Church of Scotland recently celebrated the 21st anniversary of the union of the parishes of Kincardine and Croick with Edderton.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 9, 1973

Mr Alistair John Munro (65), of Tarbet, near Scourie, well-known lobster fisherman and warden of the bird sanctuary at Handa Island, died from drowning after an "unexplained accident", the jury decided at a fatal accident inquiry at Dornoch last week. It was stated that Mr Munro, a fisherman all his life, had been alone in an open boat setting creels in the Sound of Handa on October 28 last year. The boat was found wrecked on a reef about a mile and a half south of Tarbet, "and either before or afterwards, in some manner unknown, he fell or was washed into the sea".

The county roads committee recently decided to continue their campaign to get adequate government aid towards the cost of reconstructing the road from Rhiconich to their white fish harbour at Bervie. Mr J. C. Morrison, Eddrachillis, told the meeting in Tongue that a viable and prosperous industry had been created at Kinlochbervie and therefore this road should be upgraded to principal status.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 8, 1923

At a meeting held in the Welcome Hall, Golspie, on Tuesday evening, three members of the crew of the fishing boat recently wrecked at Golspie harbour each received £3 6s 8d, being amount sent as relief from the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society.

A SKETCH of the design of the proposed war memorial at Helmsdale is on display in the window of Mr A. R. Macleod, ironmonger. It takes the form of a clock tower, rising to a height of about 70 feet. The design meets with the appreciation of the public.

Another improvement is being carried out at Helmsdale Railway Station. The home platform is to be extended to twice its length.

Well-known eyesight testing specialist, Professor S. D. Mazure, is now touring all over the county of Sutherland and is being kept busy all along the road testing the eyes of old and young.
