25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 6, 1998

Progress is being made on the planned restoration of Inchnadamph Church and the conservation of three other historic buildings in Assynt – the Macleod burial vault, Ardvreck Castle and Calda House. Project manager Maggie Campbell, Loch Assynt Lodge, said a charitable company called Historic Assynt had now been registered and, it was hoped, this would guide the project to fruition.

At least 17 teachers from six different European countries will gather at Kinlochbervie next week for three days of discussion about the environment. The conference is part of a European Union scheme called Euroschool 2000, with some input from the Central Bureau of Educational Visits and Exchanges in Edinburgh.

Increases in letting charges of school premises for extra-curricular community activities have sent shock waves across Sutherland with some charges burgeoning by almost 500 per cent from this week.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 2, 1973

For the first time in the history of Caithness and Sutherland a woman has been adopted as a prospective parliamentary candidate. She is Susan Bell (26), a native of Lanarkshire, with Caithness connections, who contested Motherwell and Wishaw for the conservatives in the 1970 General Election. Now she is to fight for the Conservatives in Caithness and Sutherland.

Helmsdale's first restaurant and discotheque is expected to be open shortly, said the man behind the project, Mr Roddy Gillies. The Bunillidh Restaurant will have 80 covers and be open from 8am to 11pm. It is hoped to have cabarets there in the summer and there will be a discotheque below the restaurant where youngsters can have coffee and play juke box records.

Sutherland Convener's Committee are protesting strongly against a suggestion by the Highland Development Board that Brora village should lose its tourist information centre.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of March 1, 1923

The unveiling of the handsome and appropriate War Memorial erected by the parish of Creich in memory of the fallen was performed on Monday afternoon by Col A. L. Macmillan in the presence of an immense assemblage. Despite the inclemency of the weather, there was a large and representative gathering of people from all parts of the district and from neighbouring parishes to witness the most solemn and impressive ceremony that has ever taken place in Bonar Bridge.

Sutherland Education Authority was told at its meeting in Lairg last Wednesday that there had been complaints about the bad attendance of two pupils of the name of Henderson at Altnaharra school and the Executive Officer had been instructed to make inquiries thereanent. His information was that the pupils were resident at a distance of over three miles from the school. It was decided to give the regulation lodging allowance if Mr Henderson agreed to his children staying at Altnaharra.
