25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of January 23, 1998

Three top Highland Council posts currently based in Sutherland are to go outwith the county as part of a budget cutting jobs amalgamation exercise. Sutherland and Caithness are to share one area manager for cultural and leisure services; for social work; and for education. The new postholders for both cultural and leisure services, and social work will be based in Caithness. But the education manager will be based in Brora. Sutherland is also to share with Ross and Cromarty and Skye and Lochalsh a new area manager for protective services, with the post based in Dingwall.

The worst snowfalls of the winter so far fell at the weekend, temporarily paralysing public services in the north. Households throughout Sutherland lost their electricity and roads quickly blocked up as high winds formed large snowdrifts.

Plans for a beer garden in the back yard of the Eagle Hotel have got the green light despite objections from neighbours who said it would create congestion and noise.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of January 19, 1973

A "DRASTIC remedy" to solve the traffic congestion problem on the Scourie-Kylestrome road to the Kylesku ferry has been suggested by Dr D. J. C. Cameron, the county medical officer of health. In a letter before Sutherland Roads Committee recently, Dr Cameron suggested that the county council might consider banning holiday caravans in the summer months. Dr Cameron said his immediate concern was the considerable delays and difficulties the physiotherapist met on his regular journeys in the summer to Kinlochbervie.

The Post Office, on January 25, will introduce their second minibus mail and passenger service in the north, again in Sutherland, at Skerray. The first was started at Kylesku last year.

Sutherland Education Committee has agreed to fence off completely the loch which is "on the doorstep" of Lochinver school. At the moment only the deeper parts are fenced off. There are fears over smaller children going out onto ice.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of January 18, 1923

Sutherland Education Authority has received a petition from the parents in Achnacarnin district saying they would withhold their children from school unless Achnacarnin side school was reopened. They would not send their children to Stoer school. Prosecution will follow if the children are not sent to school.

Several of the Golspie fishermen have decided to emigrate to Detroit, and their purpose is to engage in the shipping or fishing line. The inshore fishing nowadays but provides a precarious livelihood, and thus their decision to try their fortunes in another part of the world.

A local gentleman has offered £200 towards the fitting of a clock on the Helmsdale War Memorial, to be erected in the Castle Park.

The well-known sporting estate of Shinness, situated near Lairg, is on the market. It comprises a deer forest, grouse moor and plantations.
