25 YEARS AGO

From the Northern Times of November 28, 1997

A REQUEST by Kinlochbervie Community Council to lease the public toilets at Rhiconich has been granted. Meeting in Dornoch on Monday, Sutherland County Committee agreed to hand over the building at a nominal rent. Durness councillor Francis Keith said Kinlochbervie Community Council were considering retaining part of the building as a toilet and turning the other part into a tourist information centre.

The first private investigation agency in the Highlands has been set up in Dornoch. Former hotel manager Alan Bell is running his new business, Highland Investigations and Security Services, from his home, Claremont, in Castle Street. The 31-year-old is offering a range of investigation services as well as a close protection or bodyguarding service.

The Highland Council has asked its area committees to come up with ways of celebrating the Millennium such as creating a garden or restoring landmarks.

50 YEARS AGO

From the Northern Times of November 24, 1972

Sutherland County Council are to send a deputation to St Andrew's House to urge the Scottish Development Department to give grant aid towards the cost of a bridge to replace the present ferry service at Kylesku, in the north-west. Mr Robert Maclennan, MP for the constituency is to be asked for his support.

PC John Lenon Cameron, of Dornoch, was on Wednesday presented with the Royal Humane Society's testimonial on parchment for rescuing a father and son from possible drowning last May. PC Cameron (47), swam out to the assistance of Mr Brian Arrowsmith and Mark Arrowsmith (17), on holiday from Yorkshire, when their sailing dinghy overturned about 100 yards off Dornoch beach.

Kenny Campbell, Sutherland's strong man, now living in Ardgay, is looking for a wife. The red-bearded Kenny (31) placed an advert in an Inverness paper last week: "Well-known bearded Highlander would like to meet non-smoking lady."

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of November 23, 1922

The result of the poll for the election of a Parliamentary representative for the combined constituency of Caithness and Sutherland was declared at Wick on Friday afternoon, when the figures revealed that Sir Archibald Sinclair, the Liberal candidate, had been returned by a substantial majority over his opponent, Sir R. L Harmsworth, who had been the Parliamentary representative for Caithness from 1900 to 1918, and for the combined constituency from 1918 to 1922. Sir Archibald Sinclair's majority was 1,912, and he received 7,715 votes, while his opponent got 5,803.

The first matter that is to be considered by the new Helmsdale Parish Council is the lighting of the village streets. The majority are in favour of a proper street lighting scheme being set agoing and the necessary expenditure levied on the parish rates.

The Drill Hall at Helmsdale is meantime undergoing a much needed painting and a new stage is being fitted.
