25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of October 3, 1997

Fish farm workers on the north-west coast were this week told they must accept cuts in their pay - or risk losing their jobs. Joseph Johhnston & Sons Ltd, Scourie, have signalled their intention to increase rents on workers' tied houses, take away travelling allowances and cut bonuses. The move is in a bid to save money as the company attempts to weather one of the worst downturns in the industry's relatively short history.

Strathy's new village hall will be officially opened tonight when local resident Mrs Margaret Henderson (87) unveils a plaque and the community joins together to celebrate their achievement with a rousing ceilidh.

A team of hard-working Brora teenagers have transformed the derelict old ice house, situated beside Brora harbour. The youngsters filled a staggering 150 bin bags full of rubbish from the ice house and cut down brambles to uncover a wall. The project was part of the Grizzly Challenge.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 29, 1972

A LOCAL crofter distinguished himself at the North Country Cheviot sheep sales at Lairg last Tuesday, when he got the third top price, £210, for a three-shear ram. Never before has a crofter so vied with farmers in this field. The crofter was Mr William Mackay of Balloan, Lairg, who also works the family holding at Rheanbreck.

The Government have now made clear their thinking on the establishment of community councils in Scotland with the reorganisation of local government. A memorandum on the subject issued to local authorities said the establishment of community councils would represent community views and needs on a countrywide basis.

The jubilant Kinlochbervie football team got a great welcome home last Saturday night when they returned with two trophies. They beat Tongue United, at Skerray, in the final of the Mackay Cup. They also brought home the Borgie Lodge Cup by being North Sutherland League champions.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 28, 1922

The annual meeting and distribution of book prizes given by Rogart Educaion Association to pupils in the several schools throughout the parish will be held tomorrow at 3pm within the Drill Hall. Mr and Mrs Heseltine, Tressady Lodge, are to give a treat to the children immediately after this distribution of prizes.

Under ideal weather conditions a pleasantly contested game between teams representing HMS Verdun and Dunrobin Estate took place on the Review Park, Dunrobin, on Thursday evening. The tars were always on the alert but were unable to draw the scores level until about five minutes from time. A 3-3 draw was a fitting result to a pleasant and friendly encounter.

Williams, the well known entertainer gave his large audience a cinema treat at Golspie Drill Hall last night, showing as he did that world-wide great film of "Tarzan of the Apes". Needless to say, the fascinating story which the film depicted, was followed closely.
